With heavy hearts, we share the devastating news that this legendary singer has died at 68

French music has lost one of its most distinctive voices. Catherine Ringer, co-founder and singer of Les Rita Mitsouko, has died at 68 after a fast-acting cancer, according to a statement from her family. She died on September 14, 2026. Born near Paris in 1957, Ringer became one of France’s most recognizable performers, known for her powerful voice, individuality, and fearless artistic style.

Ringer met guitarist Fred Chichin in 1979, and together they formed Les Rita Mitsouko. Their music blended rock, funk, electronic sounds, and French chanson into something completely their own. The duo became hugely popular during the 1980s with songs including “Marcia Baïla,” “C’est comme ça,” and “Andy.” Their music reached far beyond traditional rock audiences and made them household names across France. ❤️

Ringer and Chichin were also partners in life and had three children. Their story took a heartbreaking turn in 2007, when Chichin died from cancer at just 53. Ringer eventually returned to music, building a successful solo career while continuing to honor his memory. As recently as February 2026, she was still performing on stage in Paris, remaining active in music and causes including women’s rights and environmental issues.

Following her death, tributes poured in across France. President Emmanuel Macron remembered Ringer as an artist who turned every song into an expression of freedom and praised the unique sound she created with Chichin. Her career spanned more than four decades, leaving a lasting mark on French culture. Catherine Ringer’s voice, music, and unmistakable spirit will be remembered for generations.
