Woman reveals three symptoms she ignored before being diagnosed with stage 4 cancer at 28

At just 28, Georgie Swallow was diagnosed with stage 4 Hodgkin lymphoma after spending around 18 months brushing off symptoms she thought were caused by stress, allergies, or simply being overworked. She initially became concerned after discovering a peach-sized lump in her neck following a severe bout of flu, but she had already been experiencing other warning signs for months.

The three symptoms Georgie now wishes she had taken more seriously were intense itching, night sweats, and extreme exhaustion. Her legs became so itchy that she would scratch until her skin broke, while she was also losing weight, experiencing night sweats, and suffering repeated colds and flu-like illnesses. She said she often worried that she was “wasting everyone’s time” by visiting doctors and never imagined the symptoms could point to something as serious as cancer.

Her diagnosis and treatment also brought another devastating consequence: early menopause and the loss of her fertility. Georgie described being forced into menopause at 28 as incredibly difficult, particularly because she had not yet had children and struggled to find people her own age who understood what she was experiencing. She said cancer had taken away something she had never even been given the chance to experience.

Now 32, Georgie is sharing her story to encourage people not to automatically dismiss persistent or unusual symptoms. Itching, unexplained night sweats, ongoing fatigue, weight loss, or unexplained lumps can have many causes, but persistent symptoms deserve medical attention. Her experience is also highlighting the often-overlooked emotional impact of cancer treatment and early menopause.
