Woman Who Died for 8 Minutes Claims ‘Death is an Illusion’ as She Recalls Afterlife

Brianna Lafferty’s story has drawn attention because of what she says happened during a medical crisis in which she was declared clinically dead for about eight minutes. Lafferty, who has lived with the rare movement disorder myoclonus-dystonia, says she suddenly felt separated from her physical body. Instead of experiencing fear or pain, she remembers a profound sense of peace and awareness, describing herself as feeling “more myself than ever before.”

According to her account, she heard a voice asking whether she was ready before entering what she describes as a timeless realm. She says she encountered unfamiliar but comforting beings, experienced reality without the normal sense of time, and felt that thoughts could influence what she experienced. Other accounts of her experience describe surreal landscapes, numbers, and a place where she eventually encountered a group of beings before returning to her body.

The experience profoundly changed how she views death. Lafferty now says she believes “death is an illusion” and that consciousness continues beyond the physical body. She has also said the experience helped her replace fear and anger with gratitude and gave her a stronger sense of purpose. After returning to life, she faced a difficult recovery, including having to relearn how to walk and talk and dealing with lasting medical complications.

But there is an important distinction: Lafferty’s experience is a personal account, not scientific proof of an afterlife. Near-death experiences remain an active area of research, with scientists exploring possible neurological explanations involving oxygen deprivation, brain activity and altered perception. Whatever the ultimate explanation, her story raises a fascinating question: when the body is pushed to its limits, what exactly happens to consciousness?
