A Boy Came to Heart Surgery Alone—One Doctor Gave Him a Family and Found Homes for His Five Siblings

When Dr. Amy Beethe walked into a hospital room at Children’s Nebraska, she found 4-year-old True sitting alone before heart surgery. Born with hypoplastic right heart syndrome, True faced a serious procedure without a parent by his side. Yet even in that frightening moment, his playful personality appeared when he surprised Dr. Beethe with a little “Boo!” from beneath his mask.

Amy couldn’t stop thinking about the boy after his surgery. She and her husband Ryan were already foster parents, but when they went to meet True, something immediately changed. Within weeks, True was living with the Beethe family, and he eventually became their adopted son. “He’s truly become my son,” Amy said, explaining that she now fights for his health with all the determination of a mother.

But True had five siblings who were also facing difficult circumstances. The Beethes and their extended family refused to let them be separated without support. Amy and Ryan adopted one of True’s sisters, while relatives and trusted friends welcomed the other children into their homes. “We found a home for everyone,” Amy said, creating one large extended family where the siblings could remain connected.

Today, True is growing up surrounded by love. He enjoys basketball and kickball with his siblings, although he sometimes needs to stop and catch his breath. Through everything, his attitude remains remarkably simple: “Just keep going and don’t stop.” One doctor entered a hospital room and saw a lonely little boy—but instead of simply treating his heart and walking away, she helped give six children a family, stability, and a reason to hope.
