Michael Douglas is opening up about one of the most difficult periods of his life, revealing how his battle with stage-four tongue and throat cancer dramatically affected his body and his family. In his new memoir, One Helluva Ride, the 82-year-old actor recalls losing around 40 pounds during treatment—weight he said he could hardly afford to lose.

Douglas was diagnosed in 2010 after doctors discovered a tumor at the base of his tongue. He underwent weeks of chemotherapy and radiation, describing the experience as an extremely painful and exhausting period. Years earlier, he had publicly said that HPV was responsible for his particular cancer and linked the infection to oral sex. However, medical experts have stressed that while certain HPV infections are associated with oropharyngeal cancer, it is too simplistic to say that oral sex itself directly causes cancer.
The treatment took a tremendous physical toll. Douglas has recalled struggling to eat and becoming severely weakened, while his illness also deeply affected his wife, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and their children. In his memoir, he describes how his home became almost entirely centered around his recovery as he endured the worst stages of treatment.
Eventually, Douglas received the news that he was in remission, a moment that left him overwhelmed with emotion. Looking back, he says the experience changed his priorities and gave him a greater appreciation for his family and the time he has. After surviving cancer, Douglas says he sees life differently—and considers the experience a painful but profound turning point. ❤️
