“Australia’s Oldest Man, Known for Knitting Sweaters for Penguins, Passes Away Peacefully at 110”

Alfred “Alfie” Date, born on November 8, 1905, was an Australian supercentenarian who held the distinction of being Australia’s oldest living man and the second-oldest living person in the country at the time of his passing. His remarkable life journey spanned over a century, and he left a heartwarming legacy.

One of Alfie’s most endearing contributions was his dedication to knitting. He gained widespread recognition for his unique hobby: creating tiny sweaters for Phillip Island Penguins. These adorable woolen jumpers were essential for the penguins’ well-being after an oil spill left them in need of protection from the elements. Alfie’s nimble fingers worked tirelessly to ensure the little creatures stayed warm and dry.

At the impressive age of 110 years old, Alfie Date peacefully passed away in his nursing home at the Peninsula Village aged care facility on the Central Coast of New South Wales. His daughter, Marjorie Ransome, fondly remembers her father’s illustrious life and the treasure trove of happy memories he leaves behind .

Alfie’s legacy extends beyond his longevity; it encompasses compassion, creativity, and a heartwarming connection to the penguins he cared for. His tiny sweaters continue to remind us of the simple acts of kindness that can make a significant impact.
