For years — for decades — Jill kept the secret.

Every December, a familiar song plays across America, telling the story of two former lovers who meet on Christmas Eve in a grocery store, buy beer after failing to find an open bar, and sit talking in a parked car as snow turns to rain. It sounds fictional, but it really happened.

Christmas Eve 1975 in Peoria, Illinois, Dan Fogelberg went out for whipping cream while his former high school sweetheart Jill Anderson was sent for eggnog. They unexpectedly met at the only open convenience store. She didn’t recognize him at first, but when she did they laughed, spilled her purse, and caught up after years apart. With nowhere open, they bought beer and sat in her car talking for two hours about life, love, and how much had changed.

Five years later Fogelberg turned the night into the song “Same Old Lang Syne,” released in 1980, which reached the Billboard Top 10 and became a holiday classic. He kept the story almost entirely true, changing only small details like her eye color and occupation for lyrical flow. The song captured not Christmas joy, but quiet nostalgia, loss, and the distance between who people were and who they become.

Decades later, Jill Anderson confirmed the story was real, revealing the experience only after Fogelberg’s death in 2007. She had kept the memory private for years out of respect, while the song quietly became a Christmas staple for millions. The original store still exists in Peoria and the moment lives on as part of American holiday music history.
