Adulting is hard, and just when you think your hygiene routine is fine, science often says otherwise. From towels to bras to showers, there are actual guidelines that might surprise you. Don’t worry if you’ve been doing things “wrong” your whole life — most people have, and there’s always time to adjust.
Let’s start with bath towels and sheets. Towels should ideally be washed every few uses — about every 2 to 3 days for bath towels, and even more often for hand towels. Bed sheets, on the other hand, should be changed about once a week, although many people stretch it longer. Pillowcases and mattress covers can last a few weeks to a few months depending on use, but keeping a regular rotation helps maintain better hygiene and skin health.
Showering is another surprising topic. Dermatologists often suggest that most people only need to shower every two to three days, not daily. Over-washing, especially with hot water, can dry out the skin and remove natural protective oils. Hair washing also varies depending on hair type, but generally 2 to 4 times a week is enough for most people. Curly or thick hair can often go longer, while oily hair may need slightly more frequent washing.
Finally, bras should be washed every 3 to 4 wears, not daily. Wearing the same bra two days in a row is also discouraged so the elastic can recover. While this may sound strict, these habits help extend the life of clothing and maintain better hygiene overall. Small changes like these can make a big difference in comfort and cleanliness.
