After more than 40 years of working with children, entrepreneur Duana Garrett is making history in Lancaster, California, by opening what is described as the city’s first children’s skating rink founded by a Black woman. Her new business, Wheels of Fun, was created for children ages 5 to 12, including those with special and sensory needs, giving families a safe and welcoming place to skate, socialize and stay active.
Garrett’s inspiration came from decades of working with young people and noticing that many children had limited recreational opportunities. Some had never even experienced roller skating. Instead of simply recognizing the need, she turned her idea into a family-focused destination designed to encourage children to spend less time on screens and more time moving, playing and connecting with others.
Wheels of Fun officially celebrated its Grand Opening on August 16, 2026, at 44830 Valley Central Way in Lancaster. The colorful facility features a fun, kid-friendly atmosphere, bright-orange signature skates and activities designed to help children build confidence, learn new skills and make friends. The opening celebration included skating, music, food and a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
For Garrett, the rink represents much more than a new business. It is the culmination of decades spent supporting children and an opportunity to create something lasting for families in her community. By combining entrepreneurship, physical activity and inclusion, Garrett hopes Wheels of Fun will become a place where children can create memories, discover a love for skating and simply enjoy being kids.
