Kurt Kinley, a 20-year-old Illinois graduate with Down syndrome, had always dreamed of going to college, just like his older siblings. After high school, the pandemic delayed his plans, so Kurt spent several months gaining valuable work experience at a local bakery and trampoline park while waiting for the right opportunity to continue his education.
When he applied to the Heartland Academy for Learning Opportunities (HALO) at Heartland Community College, Kurt went through the same application and interview process as other students. When his acceptance letter finally arrived, his family gathered around to share the special moment. As Kurt realized he had been accepted, he became overwhelmed with emotion.
His brother Glenn captured the touching moment and later shared it online. Glenn wrote that Kurt called him while fighting back tears and said, “Glenn, I’m going to college.” The emotional reaction quickly touched thousands of people, inspiring families of people with disabilities and showing how powerful an opportunity can be when someone is given the support to pursue their dreams.
Kurt went on to enroll in the HALO program, where he could develop important skills such as cooking, reading, math, money management, and independent living while experiencing college life alongside his peers. His family hopes his story reminds others that having a disability does not mean giving up on big dreams. With the right opportunities, encouragement, and support, people can accomplish far more than others may expect. ❤️
