Parents forced to pull plug on daughter after sleepover horror

Andrea and Paul Haynes are sharing their daughter’s story in hopes of preventing another family from experiencing the same tragedy. Their 13-year-old daughter, Esra, suffered cardiac arrest after taking part in a dangerous social media trend known as “chroming,” which involves inhaling toxic chemicals, such as aerosol deodorant, to experience a brief high. What began as an ordinary sleepover with friends quickly turned into every parent’s worst nightmare.

When Esra’s parents received the late-night phone call, they rushed to find paramedics desperately trying to save her. Esra was taken to the hospital, where doctors fought to keep her alive, but after eight days on life support, her family was told she had suffered irreversible brain damage. Faced with an unimaginable decision, they said goodbye to their daughter while surrounded by family and friends.

Esra was remembered as a talented athlete, co-captain of her local football and netball club, a BMX rider, and a national aerobics champion. Her sudden passing devastated not only her family but also her classmates, teammates, and the wider community. Her parents say her siblings were left heartbroken, and the loss has changed their lives forever.

Now, Andrea and Paul are speaking publicly to raise awareness about the dangers of inhaling household chemicals. They hope their daughter’s story encourages parents to talk openly with their children about risky online trends and reminds young people that a single decision can have irreversible consequences. Their message is simple: no viral challenge is worth risking a life.
