Jo Frost, widely known as “Supernanny,” has sparked debate after criticizing what she calls “lazy” modern parenting and warning that many children are being raised without essential life skills. In a recent social media video, the 55-year-old parenting expert said she believes today’s approach is “disabling” children rather than helping them become independent.
Frost explained that many children are capable of doing far more than they are currently encouraged to do, but parents often step in too quickly. She pointed to everyday examples such as older children still using strollers, continued reliance on pacifiers beyond early childhood, and delays in learning basic self-care skills like brushing teeth, using cutlery properly, and understanding hygiene routines. According to her, these habits can slow down a child’s natural development of independence.
The TV personality stressed that the issue is not necessarily a lack of love or care, but a lack of intention in daily parenting choices. She acknowledged that modern life is busy and demanding, but argued that convenience often takes priority over teaching. “Every time we step in and do it for them, we take away an opportunity for them to become capable,” she said, urging parents to focus on consistency and patience when teaching basic skills.
Her comments have sparked mixed reactions online. Some parents and educators agreed with her concerns, pointing to screen time and reduced communication as contributing factors. Others defended modern parents, arguing that work pressures and exhaustion make parenting more challenging than ever. Despite the debate, Frost maintained that independence must be taught early, or children risk growing up less prepared for everyday life.
