In 2005, Ann Serrano made an extraordinary sacrifice by donating one of her kidneys to save her husband, comedian George Lopez. At the time, Lopez was suffering from a serious kidney condition caused by a congenital abnormality that had gradually damaged his kidneys. Without hesitation, Ann volunteered to be his donor, saying there was never any doubt because she loved him and wanted him to live. The transplant was successful, and Lopez later described it as a miracle that gave him a second chance at life.
The couple had married in 1993 and welcomed their daughter, Mayan, in 1996. Although Ann had already forgiven George for an earlier affair before the transplant, she hoped they could rebuild their marriage. However, as his career continued to grow, their relationship became increasingly strained. Years later, reports of more infidelity surfaced, leaving Ann heartbroken. She eventually decided she could no longer accept the betrayal and filed for divorce after 17 years of marriage.
Despite the painful ending, the family remained connected. Their daughter, Mayan, admitted the public nature of the divorce made everything even more difficult, and she distanced herself from her father for several years. Over time, however, they slowly repaired their relationship. Today, father and daughter even work together on the comedy series Lopez vs. Lopez, using humor to explore some of the real-life challenges they experienced as a family.
Ann and George have also managed to maintain a respectful friendship. In a lighthearted family video, Ann joked that George simply “didn’t realize you had to stop dating other people when you got married.” Though their marriage ended, they continue to support one another as parents, longtime friends, and partners in raising awareness about kidney disease and organ donation.
