Actor Sam Neill has died at the age of 78, with his longtime representative confirming that pneumonia was the cause of his sudden passing. Neill died on July 13 in Sydney, Australia, surrounded by his family. In a statement shared on his social media accounts, his loved ones described his passing as unexpected and thanked the medical staff who cared for him, while asking for privacy during their time of grief.
Neill had publicly revealed in 2023 that he was being treated for stage-three angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma. Earlier this year, however, he announced that he was cancer-free following chemotherapy and CAR T-cell therapy. Friends and family later explained that although the treatment had successfully eliminated the cancer, it had left his immune system severely weakened, making it difficult for his body to recover from pneumonia. His family plans to hold a private memorial at his farm in New Zealand and has encouraged donations to charities supporting healthcare and wildlife conservation instead of sending flowers.

Over a career spanning more than five decades, Neill became one of New Zealand’s most celebrated actors. He rose to international fame with films such as My Brilliant Career, Dead Calm, and The Hunt for Red October, but he was best known for portraying Dr. Alan Grant in the Jurassic Park franchise. His acclaimed career also included memorable roles in Event Horizon, The Tudors, and Peaky Blinders.
Following the news of his death, tributes poured in from colleagues and friends across the film industry. Steven Spielberg, Jeff Goldblum, Nicole Kidman, Cillian Murphy, Colin Trevorrow, and Richard E. Grant all honored Neill’s talent, kindness, and generosity. Many remembered him not only as a remarkable actor but also as a warm, humble person whose legacy will continue to inspire audiences around the world.
